Macbook Pro 13 inch: The best laptop for video editing on a budget

The 13 inch Macbook Pro with the revolutionary Apple M1 chip has it all because this M1 chip was specially developed by Apple to master very complex graphics work. Whether you want to edit HD videos or edit 4K videos, the Macbook Pro 13 with the M1 chip is the right choice.

What makes this laptop particularly tasty is the price. This video editing laptop is available for an affordable € 1,260. However, this price can change depending on the configuration.

For whom is the Macbook Pro 13 inch with M1 Apple Chip suitable?

In my opinion, this laptop is suitable for both beginners and advanced users. One shouldn’t doubt the performance of this laptop. If you still have a few euros to spare, you can increase the 8GB RAM memory to 16GB when configuring.

Be sure to purchase an external hard drive and USB and memory card adapters

As with the 16-inch Macbook Pro, Apple has also saved the USB and memory card inputs. Therefore, you absolutely have to buy an adapter in order to be able to transfer your video data to the laptop. You should also buy the same Lacie hard drive that I recommended earlier.

2. Apple MacBook Pro 16 inch with TouchBar and Touch ID

Highlights of this video editing laptop

  • 9th generation 6 ‑ core Intel Core i7 processor
  • 16GB Ram
  • Brilliant retina display with True Tone technology
  • Touch Bar and Touch ID
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4 GB GDDR6 graphics memory
  • Ultra-fast SSD with 512GB
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • 6 ‑ loudspeaker system with woofers with power compensation
  • Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports
  • Up to 11 hours of battery life

Why the Apple Macbook Pro 16 inch is currently the best laptop for video editing:

The Apple Macbook Pro 16 inch offers everything you need for professional video editing: A 6-core Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB Ram, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M graphics card with 4GB GDDR6 graphics memory, and an ultra-fast 512GB SSD hard drive make this laptop the best notebook on the market.

Personally, I have the predecessor of the cheap Apple Macbook Pro from 2015 and have never been disappointed in the time I’ve worked with this laptop. Apple-designed the Macbook Pro for the most complex graphics work and from my own experience I can say that this laptop actually does what it says on the tin.

Video editing works especially well with Apple’s video editing software Final Cut Pro X . This is chargeable, costs € 299.99 and can be purchased here in the Apple shop. When I dared to switch to the MacBook Pro in 2015, I also switched to this video editing program. That was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Final Cut Pro X was developed for Mac operating systems and got the best performance and performance out of the components of the laptop.

Video editing without jerking

What I particularly like about the MacBook Pro is that the video editing process runs smoothly. No jerking and no annoying waiting during processing. I had previously worked with Magix-Video-Deluxe on a Microsoft PC and was tired of the program getting stuck in the middle of editing and all information is lost. I didn’t have this problem with Final Cut Pro.

No data loss when editing video

Sometimes Final Cut Pro crashes too, but it has an auto memory that saves 100% of the data in the editing process. This means that after a rare crash, you can continue working in the same place where you were. That is a huge plus.

So I would only recommend buying the MacBook Pro if you actually want to work with Final Cut Pro X.

Best laptop for 4K video editing

Whether you want to cut HD videos or 4K videos, this powerhouse has it all!

Be sure to buy an external storage device

The only drawback with the Macbooks is that the 512GB internal memory is too small for video editing. You could have the hard drive upgraded when you buy it, but Apple charges a lot of money for it. I would rather invest that money in upgrading the processor or ram component.

Better buy this Local hard drive. I have 2 of these Lacie hard drives that I use almost exclusively for video editing. These Lacie hard drives are particularly popular with filmmakers because they work particularly well with the MacBook Pro and Final Cut Pro X. All you have to do is plug in the hard drive and change the settings in Final Cut Pro X so that the render data and final videos are saved to the hard drive.

You can also use this hard drive to store the original video data. Personally, I never upload the videos to the laptop’s hard drive, but rather directly to my Lacie hard drive.

Transfer videos from the camera to the laptop

Apple has replaced the USB and memory card inputs in the new Macbook Pro with USB-C. Therefore, you also have to buy this adapter so that you can transfer video data from your memory card or camera to the laptop.

3. GIGABYTE AERO 15 OLED YC-9DE5760SP 15.6

Highlights of this value video editing laptop

  • Intel Core i9-10980HK 8x 2.40 GHz
  • 64 GB Ram
  • Oled display
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3080 8.0 GB
  • Ultra-fast SSD with 2TB
  • Intel UHD Graphics 630
  • 1x Thunderbolt 3, 3x USB 3.1 Gen1, Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
  • Up to 8.5 hours of battery life (according to the manufacturer)

Why the GIGABYTE AERO 15 OLED YC-9DE5760SP 15.6 is suitable for video editing

In second place I have listed a laptop that is technically superior to the MacBook Pro. All components, i.e. the processor, the hard drive, the graphics card, and the hard drive, are superior to the MacBook. Only the runtime is (according to the manufacturer) shorter than that of the Macbook.

Nevertheless, the GIGABYTE AERO 15 OLED YC-9DE5760SP 15.6 got second place on my list because this notebook does not work with Final Cut Pro and you have to use different editing software.

The most technically powerful laptop on the list!

Is that a big problem?

No, absolutely not. Technically speaking, you get more bang for your buck with this laptop, but you have to keep in mind that Adobe Premiere Pro needs more performance. The fact that Final Cut Pro does not work on this laptop and therefore an alternative software is mandatory is a major negative point in my opinion.

So if you don’t want to work with Final Cut Pro, you can use this video editing laptop.

4. Dell XPS 15

Highlights of this student video editing laptop

  • 10th Generation Intel Core i9-10885H (16 MB cache, up to 5.3 GHz, 8 cores)
  • 32 GB Ram DDR4
  • Low reflection InfinityEdge touch display with 15.6 ″ UHD + (3840 x 2400) and 500 cd / m² screen NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti 4 GB DDR6 graphics card
  • 1 terabyte hard drive
  • Connections: USB-C 3.1 with power supply and DisplayPort, SD card reader v6.0, 3.5 mm combo socket for headphones / microphone, device for security lock (wedge shape), Thunderbolt 3 with power supply and DisplayPort USB-C-to-USB -A 3.0 / HDMI 2.0 adapter included

Dell XPS 15 is a powerful notebook for video editing

The Dell XPS 15 is one of the top-performing video editing laptops for girls and boys on this list. If you have decided to work with Adobe Premiere Pro and have the necessary change, then you can use this notebook. It actually has everything you need: a powerful processor, an unbelievable 32 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1650 Ti 4 GB DDR6 graphics card. Editing videos for this notebook is child’s play.

Who is the Dell XPS 15 suitable for?

I would recommend this laptop to more advanced videographers as it is actually a big investment. This laptop is more expensive compared to the other video editing notebooks, but it also offers power.

5. Apple Mac Mini with Apple M1 chip

Highlights of this video editing laptop

  • Apple M1 chip, 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores
  • 8 GB Ram
  • Apple 8-core GPU graphics card
  • 256 GB SSD hard drive
  • Ports: Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports with support for: DisplayPort Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gbit / s), USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbit / s), Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI and VGA with appropriate adapters
  • Display: Aztine 15.6 Inch Portable Monitor 1920 × 1080 Full HD IPS Screen with HDMI

The cheaper video editing notebook in the list

The Apple Mac Mini is not a laptop, but it can be used (almost) like a laptop. The MacMini is so small that it fits in any backpack. All you need is a portable monitor because you can take it with you and then connect it to the Mac. So you always have your mobile video editing station with you. The only drawback: You need a power source so that you can work with it.

But what makes this set-up tasty is the price. Together with the portable monitor, the Apple Mac Mini costs less than 1000 euros!

Who would I recommend the Apple Mac Mini to?

I would recommend this set-up to people who are on a budget but still want to edit videos professionally. So if you don’t want to edit your videos outdoors but in different offices, at school, or at home with a power source, then the Apple Mac Mini could be the right thing for you.

The Apple Mac Mini works best with the video editing software Final Cut Pro X. You should keep this in mind when purchasing.

Also buy this hard drive and SD card reader

You should definitely buy this Lacie hard drive with USB 3.0 and this SD card adapter. As with the MacBook laptops, the hard drive space is also a problem with the Apple Mini, especially with large render files that arise during video editing. Hence, this external hard drive will help you with this problem. The SD card adapter helps you to load the video files from your camera onto the hard drive.

6. Huawei MateBook X Pro

Highlights of this video editing laptop

  • Intel Core i7 with 4 processor cores
  • 13.3 inch display
  • 16 GB Ram
  • Integrated
  • 1 terabyte SSD hard drive
  • Connections: 1x USB-A, 2x USB-C (including 1x Thunderbolt 3 capable) and headphone jack
  • Battery life according to the manufacturer: 10 hours

MateBook Pro X is a MacBook alternative in a Windows coat

If you’re a fan of the MacBook’s design but want to work with a Windows operating system, the MateBook Pro X could be the laptop for you. This video editing notebook is sleek, simple, and elegant. A perfect companion for on the go with enough power for professional video editing in HD.

Who would this laptop be for?

I would recommend this laptop to beginners and influencers who want to edit videos in HD. I would be careful with this notebook when it comes to 4K video editing. For 4K video editing, I mentioned better alternatives in the list above.

However, if you are a hobby filmmaker and want to edit videos for family, friends, Youtube, Instagram, or TikTok, then you can do it with this laptop.

7. MacBook Air with M1 Apple chip

Highlights of this video editing laptop

  • Apple M1 chip, 8-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores
  • 13.3 inch display
  • 8 GB GB Ram
  • Integrated graphics card
  • 1 terabyte SSD hard drive
  • Ports: Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports with support for: Charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3 (up to 40 Gbit / s), USB 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbit / s)
  • Battery life according to the manufacturer: up to 18 hours of battery life

MacBook Air is the best video editing laptop for under $1000

Apple has revolutionized the laptop market with the M1 chip: Apple launched its own M1 in 2020, which has further optimized the performance of MacBook components. Thus, the MacBook Air has also made it into the line of video editing laptops. Thanks to the M1 chip, video editing of HD videos is possible without any problems. For 4K videos, however, I would recommend the MacBook Pro version.

Who would this laptop be for?

I recommend these laptop hobby videographers, content creators, and influencers who want to upload videos to Youtube, Instagram, or TikTok. The MacBook Air masters the editing of HD videos with flying colors. However, if you want to cut 4K videos or more complicated projects, then I advise against this laptop.

Lenovo Legion 7 16ACHg6 video editing laptop and gaming notebook in one

The Lenovo Legion 7 is a powerhouse that is suitable for both gaming and video editing. In addition to an Intel Core i7-10875H with 8 processor cores, 16 GB RAM, and an RTX 2070 Super Max-Q 8GB GDDR6 graphics card, the Lenovo Legion 7 also has an incredible 1.5 terabytes of storage space. This means that you don’t need an additional external hard drive for your videos. Power, storage, and gaming, if that’s what you’re looking for then this laptop is for you. HD & 4K video editing is no problem for this powerhouse!

Who would this laptop be for?

I would recommend this laptop to people who want to edit professional videos as well as use the laptop for gaming and other graphics work. So if you enjoy working with Microsoft and don’t want to compromise on performance, then this high-end laptop is for you.

9. Razer Blade Pro

Highlights of this best budget video editing laptop

  • Intel i7-10875H 8-core processor

Video editing is no problem with the Razer Blade Pro. Whether you want to edit HD, 4Kor complicated videos, or projects, the Razer Blade Pro will have it all. The Razer Blade Pro is actually a gaming laptop, but its high-end components also make this laptop a companion for any videographer.

Who would this laptop be for?

I would recommend this laptop to professionals and videographers with professional demands. This powerhouse costs just under 3,000 euros (this can change depending on the component configuration). This is a big investment that I wouldn’t recommend to beginners unless you want to use the laptop for gaming as well.
